Blog me Amadeus

Preparandome para asistir al concierto de David Bowie el 15 de noviembre en Lyon, tome prestado de la cooperativa el disco Heathen. Como no puedo escribir una critica ni la mitad de sofisticada de las de HateMachine, solo dire que el disco me parece bueno.

Por otra parte, parece que el comportamiento de blogspot que estaba haciendo que tanto TEL como TOL aparecieran actualizados todo el tiempo ya se acabo. Resta arreglar los thumbnails de TEL (al perder mi tabla de particiones perdi, entre otras cosas, el script). La idea de Hernando del mini Top5 es buena. Aunque me gustaria mas una imagen que un iframe ;).

El robot malvado se complace en presentar varios blogs invitados el dia de hoy. Leamos :

Azul's blog: Hola, si ultimamente no he escrito es porque he estado muy ocupado re-escribiendo el sistema operativo GNU/Linux como un interprete de scheme. La idea es que cada modulo del kernel sea definido como una expresion en scheme. Por ejemplo, en vez de las 10.000 lineas de codigo en C que son el sistema de archivos, ahora se escriben de la siguiente manera:

((((define file-system (kernel-module (a b c d e lambda(n) (con a (set bogomips b ..... ((((........

...)))))))))

Como se puede ver, esto es mucho mas claro, y solo toma unos 10 minutos en escribir. Hmm, pensandolo bien se puede hacer una pequenna optimizacion para alcanzar complejidad logaritmica en el algoritmo de recoleccion de basura.

Javo's Blog: Luego de estudiar durante un par de horas un teorema que solo entiende mi tutor, un tipo en la India que se volvio loco el verano pasado, y yo, fui a ver la pelicula "Girasoles y Perros" del director finlandes Jurgen Klossidef. Este lindisimo film nos transporta a un Helsinki de los agnos 40, lleno de tristeza y nostalgia. Mi escena favorita es aquella en la que el protagonista (un escritor frustrado) le confiesa al primo de su amante que sufre de cancer, en un cafetin gris y oscuro. El final no lo cuento para no dagnarles la pelicula. Creo que la vida es eso, un cafetin gris y oscuro en Helsinki.

Hernan's blog of hate: Ayer en la noche fui al bar que llamare M., con mi amigo R. y su novia Y. En medio de la musica electronica, la cual bailaban indecentemente una mano de chinitos no iniciados, mi amigo me confeso que de tanto en tanto participaba en rituales orgiasticos y satanicos en el cementerio central. Para completar la jornada, la novia de mi amigo, Y, termino vomitandose encima mio cuando me iba a confesar alguna barbaridad. Finalmente, al llegar a mi casa, prendi el televisor y me encontre con una re-emision de un capitulo antiguo de Don Chinche. En fin, esto es lo que nos merecemos, pueblo inculto e ignorante que somos!!

Accusor's blog: Aunque hoy tenia 5 parciales, ayer decidi que era primordial acabar otra vez el espectacular juego CAPTAIN TSUBAZA. Luego de vencer a Brazil 542 goles a cero, me fui para donde Kmilo, donde jugamos un poco de playstation. Creo que me fue como un c*** en el parcial, pero afortunadamente antes de entrar, una nigna a la que llamare Pepita, me sonrio y quede de llamarla.

Herramienta de trabajo cooperativo

Volviendo al viejo estilo de varias notas inconexas (the poorman's post), aqui vamos :

Estoy usando ahora un sistema de comments, no tan bueno como haloscan, que no esta aceptando nuevos usuarios.

Publique un comentario un poco agresivo en el blog de Ascaroth en un post al menos igual de agresivo. Mis criticas son unica y exclusivamente contra el post en particular.

Termine de implementar el sistema de "awereness" para mi aplicacion de trabajo cooperativo. La parte un poco truculenta era implementar una interfaz de notificacion de eventos del sistema de archivos que escribi en java, usando las librerias nativas del sistema operativo. Por supuesto hubo que usar JNI con la libreria FAM de linux y otra libreria analoga en windows, cuya interfaz JNI ya habia escrito German Vega

Tome prestado el DVD de Nosferatu de algo parecido a "la cooperativa de trabajadores" de la empresa donde trabajo.

Una de las cosas que mas me molesta (entre muchas) al trabajar en windows es la auscencia de varios "desktops" como se tienen en X windows. El caos de ventanas en el que se termina es terrible.

Esto suena chevere : Charva. Basicamente las API de awt y swing implementadas de manera que la GUI es pintada como ASCII en un terminal. Si realmente funciona bien (no lo he probado) seria buenisimo para poder desarrollar y mantener sin ningun costo adicional interfaces que funcionan en ambientes de ventanas, y ambientes de texto. Los screenshots muestran que los menubar, los tabbed panel, y los widgets basicos (textfield, button, label), y aun table funcionan! Wow.

Ayer, alienado por el calor, parti de mi estudio en el 8 Rue de Renauldon con el objeto de caminar un poco y refrescarme. Luego de varios minutos y cavilaciones sobre la naturaleza bidimensional del conocimiento, arribe al parque del museo. En la polvareda que se convierte en el caminito de recorrido del parque, descubri a varios nativos de diferentes edades dedicados al pasatiempo conocido como "Petanque", que traducido en nuestra lengua se convierte en "tejo frances" o "turmeque galo". Divertido, me quite los zapatos, y me eche por tierra, en una lomita adyacente, y me dedique a estudiar a los aborigenes.

El juego en cuestion, que solo he tenido la oportunidad de jugar en tres ocasiones, es muy divertido y sus reglas, las cuales explicare, muy sencillas.

El juego se desarrolla sobre un campo plano de tierra. Algunos ligeros desniveles, sin embargo, pueden ser deseables. El equipo necesario es : Al menos 3 bolas metalicas por participante, del tamano de una bola de tenis, y una pequena bola, conocida como el "cochonnet".

El cochonnet se arroja a una distancia de alrededor unos 8 metros. Luego, los jugadores de un equipo lanzan por turnos sus bolas hasta que alguna de sus bolas se convierta en la bola mas cercana al cochonet. En ese momento el otro equipo pasa a jugar, y asi sucesivamente.

Es valido que una bola toque o empuje cualquier otra bola ya en juego, incluido el cochonet.

Cuando uno de los dos equipos ha jugado todas sus bolas, el otro equipo puede jugar todas sus bolas.

Cuando todas las bolas han sido jugadas, el equipo ganador es aquel que tiene la bola mas cercana al cochonnet. En ese momento se cuenta el numero de bolas pertenecientes al equipo ganador que se encuentran en un circulo con centro en el cochonnet, y radio menor a la distancia entre el cochonnet y la bola del equipo contrario mas cercana. Ese es el numero de puntos que recibe el equipo ganador. Se juegan varias rondas hasta que algun equipo alcance los 21 puntos.

El partido entre la seleccion Colombia de football y la seleccion francesa en la copa de confederaciones probablemente solo interesaba al presidente de la FIFA y los dibujantes de Captain Tsubaza. Y a mi, que como unica otra opcion tenia una pelicula reciente (1970) con Jean Paul Belmondo. Lo unico bueno que me quedo, luego de ver perder a Colombia : El haber escuchado de seguido los dos himnos nacionales que, como todos los colombianos sabemos, son los mas hermosos del mundo.

Estos ultimos dias de trabajo en STM me han dejado varias reflexiones que quiero compartir :

Cuando la linea que separaba el software del hardware no era tan clara, un computador era simplemente un computador. Mas adelante, cuando programar un aparato se convirtio en una actividad mas sofisticada que conectar y desconectar cables, y el "software" adquirio la importancia que tiene hoy en dia, un computador sin software se conviertio en una pila de hardware inutil. Cada vez mas un computador sin conexion a internet comienza a parecer "una pila inutil de hardware y software".

Puede que sea solo cuestion de costumbre, pero el sistema operativo GNU me parece mucho mas comodo para trabajar que otros sistemas unix. (i.e. bash vs tcsh).

CDE probablemente fue creado por un grupo de genios en interfaces hombre/maquina. Hoy en dia no hay una interfaz grafica equivalente : Su fealdad no le deja otra opcion al usuario que trabajar rapida y eficazmente para poder dejar de usarla. Asi mismo, su caracter monotono no muestra nada que pueda de alguna otra manera distraer al usuario.

En estos dias tome prestado de la biblioteca dos CDs, inspirado por el blog de hatenan : Rinocerose's Installation Sonore y PinkFloyd's Animals. Parte del objetivo era probar la potencia de mis recien adquiridos Mission m70i. Los comentarios musicales de Hernan son de gran valor, en mi opinion, por las siguientes razones :

El fin de semana estuve en Paris. Como mi estadia era solo de un par de dias, visite lo basico, haciendo enfasis en el museo d'Orsay, uno de los museos mas bonitos que hay en la vida. En el Louvre solo fui a una de las tres alas, porque solo tenia una tarde. Recordando las palabras de Vulpecula, pase rapidamente por la place Vendome para mirar disimuladamente a las modelos que se pasean por las joyerias de la plaza mas chic de Paris. El lunes pase por Lyon, que es otra ciudad increible, moderna y agradable.

Hoy escuche que facilmente la cantidad de recursos que han entrado a Venezuela por cuenta del petroleo pueden ser unas 20 veces lo que entro a Europa via el plan Marshall. El plan Marshall permitio la reconstruccion despues de la segunda guerra mundial y la recuperacion de una industria que habia sido destruida. Venezuela es un pais que apenas luce ligeramente menos pobre que el resto de latinoamerica, con una industria aparentemente igual de subdesarrollada y una economia dependiente del petroleo. Hay solucion?

Julio Verne : Autor del primer libro "serio" que lei, "Viaje al centro de la tierra" y de algunos de mis libros favoritos, "Miguel Strogoff", "La isla misteriosa".

Emilio Salgari: Primer autor que lei "a fondo", me refiero a las series "Sandokan" y "El corsario negro". Luego descubriria que estos escritos tienen cierto caracter casi subversivo (Escribir sobre un principe rebelde malayo como un heroe contra la Inglaterra imperialista en pleno auge del imperio britanico).

Herman Hesse: Autor del libro que mas me "marco" durante mi adolescencia :P "El lobo estepario". Creo haber leido casi todo lo que escribio.

Alberto Moravia: Autor de algunas novelas chocantes, pero bien escritas. En particular "La vida interior".

Un post para demostrar que estoy vivo. Al igual que muchos bloggers, sufro de falta de inspiracion ultimamente. Acabo de agregar a Sebas a la Evil List, de la cual lo habia mantenido aislado por pura negligencia (mia). Para quienes no conoscan a Sebastian Gonzales, es una de las personas mas inteligentes que conosco, asi como una de las mas amables.

Mi ambiente de desarrollo en Java es el siguiente:

Emacs: Un excelente editor de texto, facilmente extensible.

JDEE: Una extension para el editor de texto emacs con muchisimas funciones para desarrollar usando el lenguaje de programacion Java. Algunos ejemplos : Interfaz con el JDB, Autogeneracion del esqueleto de los comentarios Javadoc de una clase, eliminacion de imports innecesarios, generacion de los metodos set/get de todas los miembros de una clase, una barra de navegacion de clases, metodos, etc y cientos de cosas mas.

Ant: Una herramienta tipo Makefile, particularmente diseñada para el lenguaje de programacion java. Automatiza casi todas las tareas tipicas (compilacion, generacion de stubs RMI, generacion de jars, compilacion de gramaticas de JavaCC, etc), chequeando dependencias y "timestamps" para no hacer trabajo innecesario.

Recomiendo esta configuracion para todos los desarrolladores que usen Java como su lenguaje principal de programacion.

Ultimamente me he sorprendido a mi mismo deseandole suerte a las tropas iraquies y alegrandome un poquillo cuando tumban un helicoptero americano, lo confieso. Un poco con la misma simpatia que le tiene uno al contendor mas debil, en una justa deportiva desigual. Sin embargo, me digo, dado que la victoria estadunidense es segura, lo mejor que puede pasar es que ganen bien rapido para que no destrocen mas la infraestructura de ese pais, y no maten mas civiles "colateralmente". Por otra parte, se podria pensar que si las tropas leales a Saddam les ponen las cosas dificiles al ejercito gringo, es posible que los ciudadanos estadunidenses se den cuenta que la guerra no es una cosa limpia y facil, como lo quiere hacer ver la administracion de George W. Bush, donde los soldados van repartiendo libertad y democracia por donde pasan. Y puede que eso sirva para evitar otras guerras mas de este nuevo Dictador Mundial. Pero lo dudo.

I'm back to english, to reply to Alejo's "Reinventing Computing Blah!". I agree with basically everything he says, but I think some things have to be put in perspective. Using again civil engineering as an analogy, I'm sure that building the England-France tunnel was a very hard task. The time it took to was probaly not too accurately predicted in the first day, and the engineers probably didn't follow a plan described in detail in some manual. In this sense it was like creating emacs, gcc, or matanza. Bridges, on the other side, have been created so many times, that a civil-engineer only has to follow some manual that has been refined with time to build one. It probably doesn't need a highly skilled engineer. Construction times can be predicted with little error, based on the characteristics of the terrain, the measures, etc, etc. Skilled engineers probably get bored of this work after 2 or 3 bridges. Unfortunately (or fortunately) there is only one England-France tunnel, and hundreds of thousands bridges that need to be built.

Simple software must be like 95% of the software the world consumes. And unlike civil engineering, even with families of simple applications that follow the same basic structure, development times are still too difficult to predict, development is expensive, and the rate of failure is very high. I think that the excercise of thinking about the good methodologies have produced good results, but that we are still far from what can be achieved. If you are going to build the France-England tunnel or GCC, you don't use a manual, if you are going to build a bridge or a 3-tiers application, you should use one.

Hace poco prendi mi antiguo televisor y sorprendentemente estaban pasando una pelicula que no era protagonizada por Fernandel, asi que continue viendola. Poco a poco me di cuenta que se trataba de exactamente la misma historia contada en la cinta True Lies, con Arnold Schwarzenegger. Como la pelicula que yo estaba viendo, llamada "La Totale", parecia ser de los años 70s o al menos de los 80s, fue evidente que "True Lies" es un descarado re-make de "La Totale". Por supuesto, los gringos adicionaron millones de dolares en efectos especiales. Y debo admitir que lo que parecia imposible fue alcanzado por la poderosa industria cinematografica norteamericana : True Lies es igual de mala a la version original.

Esta noche he sido invitado a comer caracoles. Que dios tenga piedad de mi alma.

Ya bien lo dijo Paco Ibañez : "A galopar, a galopar.. hasta enterrarlos en el mar". Que queria decir con esto? No tengo idea.

Gracias a Hernan "La Momia" Rojas por sus sugestiones musicales, que me han llevado a kazaa-ear como desesperado en busca de mas Etienne de Crecy, Aphex Twin, etc. Doy gracias a la virgen que Hernan haya decidido a abandonar el mal camino.

Por otra parte, me veo obligado a refutar las razones de FoxTrot para considerar a Aquiles como un personaje de admirar : Resulta muy facil abandonar el comodo hogar para buscar la gloria en la guerra cuando el unico punto debil que se tiene es el talon. Estoy mas de acuerdo con la clasificacion de Vulpecula, excepto por la reinvindicacion que hace de Patroclo. Es claro que Aquiles y Patroclo eran amantes, lo cual no era nada extraño entre los guerreros helenos. Sin mas comentarios, mis personajes favoritos son Ulises y Hector.

Otro lunes, otro post. Como bien lo nota Alejo, el bendito server de blogspot cuando se va al carajo, en vez de mandar un codigo de error como dios manda, envia una pagina con un mensaje del tipo "databaseexception. /blogspot/blah/woo/foobar" o algo igualmente "ungraceful". Bien, esto por supuesto engaña a la Evil List, que considera que el blog ha sido actualizado. Alejo sugiere que el script chequee alguna frase clave de la pagina para estar seguro de que esta confrontando una version real. Esto es practico, pero obligaria a tener que hacer mantenimiento (buscar las frases validas, verificar que las frases siguen siendo validas, etc) lo cual, palabras mas palabras menos, me da pereza

Este estado de cosas me produjo un estado de ira tan grave, que no tuve otra opcion que usar Vulpecula para poder expresar mis sentimientos.

Finalmente, los excelentisimos reviews del libro "GALA: Musa o Demonio" por parte de criticos tan reconocidos como los doctores Hernando Diaz, Juan Camilo Latorre, o Alexandre Alvarez son totalmente correctos. Bravo por la literatura colombiana. Los profesores Garcia y Moreno dan un buen ejemplo de que con poco se puede lograr mucho Si, profesor Moreno, el fenomeno gala es digno de reconocimiento! Si, profesor Garcia, detras de la vasca de los chicago bulls se esconde una vastisimo universo que debe ser explorado!

Bueno, es hora de escribir un nuevo post en el infame WebLog "The Evil Robot", conocido en español como "La Robusteza Malvada".

Este post esta dedicado a Alejandro Forero Cuervo, por su apoyo incondicional a la comunidad de webloggers.

Hoy voy a referirme nuevamente a la niñez colombiana, que se encuentra sometida no solo a sistemas educativos que la obligan a leer El Principito, sino tambien a los ocultos tentaculos del imperialismo cultural, a la opresion subyacente norte-sur, a la tirania del hombre blanco terrateniente y protestante. Hablo del problema de la luna. Fijemonos en la luna, observada desde Colombia. De acuerdo a la fase (sea menguante o creciente) de la luna, se vera sea bien la superficie superior, o la superficie inferior de la cara lunar. He utilizado las palabras "inferior" y "superior" deliberadamente. La linea que divide la cara iluminada de la luna de la cara oscura es casi paralela a la linea del horizonte, es decir, vemos la luna "horizontal"... Y sin embargo casi todos los niños colombianos, al pedirseles que dibujen la luna, la dibujaran "vertical", tal como se ve en el hemisferio norte.

Uno de los grandes crimenes del sistema educativo colombiano es poner a los estudiantes de corta edad a leer El Principito. Es entendible dado que el autor del libro siempre se dirige a un lector infantil. El problema es que a esa edad a uno ese libro le parece la cosa mas idiota del mundo: a quien le interesa un principito cuando se tiene 10 años? A nadie. Este infortunado hecho a producido generaciones de colombianos que nunca llegaron a disfrutar la lectura de un libro que es bueno, cuando se lee teniendo un poco mas uso de razon.

La proxima visita de mis primos me puso a pensar : Cuales son los sitios que hay que visitar en este pueblo miserable? Cuales son los pinaculos de la civilizacion, las maravillas naturales o los monumentos historicos de la region grenoblina?.

La casa de Stendhal, el museo, que es decoroso, y el centro daran para una jornada. Y el resto del tiempo? me pregunté. La unica opcion desesperada que tengo en la cabeza es llevarlos en bus al alpe d'huez y decir "Aqui hizo historia Lucho Herrera en el Tour de France". Me temo que por la diferencia de edades, ellos sean ignorantes de la grandeza del legendario Jardinerito de Fusagasuga.

Alejo tiene razon. Es indignante insulten nuestra inteligencia con el cuento de que a un Nazgul lo puedo asustar una vulgar flecha. Y no es la unica herejia, revisemos:

Mientras Arwen huye de los Nazgul, los estratos (nubes) que se ven de fondo indican una temperatura de condensación de 3 a 4ºC a una altura de 5000 m. Segundos más tarde, el componente ultravioleta del albedo indica una componente del 14% en la lectura espectroscópica de la frontera entre la troposfera y la ionosfera, lo que implica que la temperatura de condensación a 5000m es como mínimo 6ºC.

Creo que mas importante que el trabajo desarrollado durante el postgrado, es el trabajo que se hara durante el resto de la vida despues del postgrado. Esto es valido tambien para el pregrado, claro esta, pero en menor grado : la educacion de pregrado es mucho mas general y las opciones al final del pregrado estan mucho mas abiertas.

Joel ha dicho varias veces que "el 90% de los programadores creen estar en el 10% de los mejores programadores". O algo parecido. Estoy de acuerdo con Drayru (si! el mismo de los rights of light from the who-cares-anymore..), hay que tener cuidado con la arrogancia, uno de los vicios mas extendidos entre las estrellas de cine, las top-models, los dictadores, los matematicos y los programadores.

Otro blog con el que estoy de acuerdo es con el de Vulpecula, respecto a los comentarios de Alejo sobre Javo. Si se trata de juzgar la antipatia de la gente, la unica visible es la del post de Alejo. Y para seguir de acuerdo con Vulpecula dire que si : Republic Of Rome es uno de los mejores juegos de mesa que existen, una vez se ha superado la curva de aprendizaje! La descripcion de Vulpecula sobre el juego es muy buena, pero las palabras no dan para describir la atmosfera de manipulacion y tension politica que se desarrolla durante el juego. Concesiones ilegales, mentiras, alianzas non-sanctas, compra de votos, populismo, etc. Cualquier parecido con el congreso colombiano, es pura coincidencia.

No Creo que James Bond sea "uno de nosotros". Yo por lo menos no paso mis fines de semana invitando a supermodelos a tomar martini en algun casino de Montecarlo. Hay que reconocerlo : Somos mas parecidos a Peter Parker.

Creo que el cambio de discurso de Alejo respecto a LoTR es solo por picar a Javo. Pero esto es solo una sospecha.

Varios pensamientos rapidos, sin mayor reflexion:

En el año 2001 : Amaneci el primero de enero enfermo, luego de celebrar el 31 de diciembre con un grupo de rumanos. Andrea llego a Grenoble. Me cambie a vivir al 8 rue de Renauldon. Obtuve el titulo de D.E.A. en la universidad. Andrea se fue a vivir a Montpellier. Celebre el 31 en Strasbourg, con Andrea, dos tias, y mi hermano.

Mi nombre es Bond. James Bond. Al igual que Alejo, soy seguidor de James Bond. Creo que Pierce Brosnan hace un buen papel como James Bond hoy en dia, y de todas maneras, si no era Brosnan, entonces quien?. A pesar de admirar el personaje, en el fondo estoy convencido de que detras de la imagen de bienhechor y hombre leal al servicio de la reina, la verdadera naturaleza de Bond es la de un simple y vulgar mercenario.

Por el contrario con Corto Maltese, otro de mis heroes preferidos, el lector tiene la sensacion de que detras del cinico busca-fortunas, aventurero y pirata, se esconde un idealista.

Nuestra comunidad de "blogueadores" es activa e interesante. Y como toda comunidad, esta destinada a terminar mal.

Y bien, se han acabado las vacaciones. Para entrar nuevamente en forma, esta mañana volvi el script de actualizacion de The Evil List aun mas sucio de lo que ya era. Para todos ustedes... The Evil Graph. Los nodos azules son los websites que pertencen a la evil list, y los nodos amarillos son sitios externos "populares" entre los "blogueadores" (Es decir, "linkeados" por dos sitios o mas). Las flechas, por supuesto, indican las relaciones de "link" entre los sitios (el sitio "linkeado" es el sitio al cual apunta la flecha).

El resultado no me gusto mucho, es mas util y legible una simple tabla. Pero en fin.

Como bien diria mi compadre Eduardo Miranda : "Welly, welly, welly" que en castellano de Castilla viene siendo mas o menos "Vaya, vaya, vaya". He regresado de mis vacaciones en Strasbourg. La navidad, epoca de recogimiento y reflexion, me devuelve a este pueblo olvidado de la mano de dios, y del diablo, lleno de energia. En el tren he leido el excelente libro de Jack Kerouac (autor de culto de la generacion beat), "The Dharma Bums" traducido graciosamente al frances como "Les clochards celestes". Recomendado.

Hoy y mañana pienso hacer lo que por lo menos un 50% del mundo que usa el calendario gregoriano, y el 100% de los colombianos hacen en estas epocas. Es decir, absolutamente nada. Esto dicho, me dispongo a partir luego de dejar este corto update como prueba de supervivencia.

Revolutionary? Not in the slightest, that's the way software has always been done. It's only expensive for the producer and unconvenient for the user.

Someone has to take care of the problems not directly addresed by "pure" computer science, even if those problems are not as intellectually challenging, for some people. More or less like civil engineers take care of the problems outside the scope of the pure physic models involved in, lets say, bridge conception. I think there is a point on "software engineering". Many years after the rest of the world had adopted a superior format, the colombians were still using the betamax. I don't know the details of the international scam that turned us into the place for Sony to get rid off its huge inventory of betamax, the loser side of the 80's VCR war. Today, with some luck, you can still see old and declining banners, anouncing that Colombia was "Territorio Beta". Last traces of the once last fortress of the betamax empire.

When my grandmother bought the first betamax of the family, new and fabulous horizons were open for us, her grandsons. We were ready to welcome in our young minds all the wisdom coming from Hollywood. That marvelous machine would introduce us to the misterious secrets of the american culture.

One of the first movies we saw in the betamax was MadMax III : Beyond the Thunderdome, featuring Mel Gibson, Tina Turner and some thousands extras playing the role of all sort of mutants. By that time we had only seen a bunch of movies, including the infamous Chitty Chitty Bang Bang : The adventures of the magical car, that was more of a torture than a film. This movie was of a different kind. It had action. It had humor. It had Mel Gibson wielding a chainsaw and fighting a retarded giant in the ThunderDome. Yes, this film had everything to become part of our pantheon of child memories.

Time passed, and with the skeptical eyes of a teenager I watched MadMax II : The Road Warrior, a very bad movie I tried to forget, to protect my memories of beyond the thunderdome. The movie was so mediocre the only thing I barely remember was the character of a dwarf, and her deadly boomerang.

And then, some years later, I watched Mad Max I (well, just Mad Max). This film is one of my all-time favorites. It tell us the adventures of Max in his quest for revenge, in a bizarre and fascinating world of perverted burocracy, infinite highways and motorized gangs. The atmosphere of the film could only be well described by H.P. Lovecraft. It was a film born to be a cult film.

Well, a couple of days ago I read that our favorite badassed ex-cop is ready to face again the australian post-apocalyptic wasteland. Forget Lord of the Rings and Star Wars : MadMax IV : Fury Road has been announced. I'm all giddy.

I spent a lot of hours with Fidel when we were 11, programming a commodore 64. Today, when I meet someone who owned a commodore 64, I almost always end up in a long and nostalgic conversation about what an awesome machine the commodore was. It amazes me how communities are born, grow, and eventually die, around technology. Each one with its very own culture. When the community is "the minority" the loyalty and pasion is bigger, and easily becomes zealotry, just like with any other kind of communities. I have seen this with the amiga and the macintosh, with linux and with FreeBSD. Sometimes people forget machines are only tools.

One of the reasons CVS is popular is becuase its merging algorithm treats software artifacts merely as text files, with lines of text as the undivisible unit. CVS, then, can be used to manage software projects written in any programming language. More sophisticated algorithms are aware of language syntax, and raise conflicts only when the merged result is not syntactically correct. Even more sophisticated algorithms (such as the one used in Semantic Diff) can detect frequently occuring conflicts given some knowledge of the language semantics. Why haven't those algorithms became popular "in real life"? One can easily think of adding the posibility to "plug" more merge algorithms into CVS, and map them to the appropiate files. I guess the gain is not that much.

After a weekend, there are always several things that need to be examined :

First, some people have already chosen their Goals In Life (tm). Bravo! For example Hernando came up with a very, very difficult goal.

Second, I decided there might be still hope for me. Since Andrea was going to be buzy studying for her exams this weekend, I printed a copy of the gentle introduction to haskell that Alejo had told me about, and took it with me to Montpellier. The reading was very insightful. The example of how to create a parser for the string representation of a binary tree is an example of true expressive power.

Third, I'm totally convinced that Bogota has the perfect weather on earth.

I don't understand why I hadn't been informed about vulpecula's plan to become president of Colombia 2014-2018. I also want to propose my name for the War Minister job. Very often people come to me and say :

Well, today it's your lucky day. You will find here that precious Life's Instruction Set you have been always looking for. Burn all your books of self help and motivational bullshit. You have questions, I'll give you answers. Today, my friends, I'll be your personal guru.

Let's do as the wise man said : let's start from the beggining. You need to define your goals in life. Pay special attention on doing this, if you pick the wrong goals, you'll be screwed from the first moment. Some people think it is hard to define your goals in life. There is no reason for this to be hard, everyone of us has some idea of what he/she wants to be like. Think about this : when you buy clothes, you buy them thinking on how that ideal person you'd like to be like would dress. Now that you have some image or that person you'd like to be like, define your goals based on that image. Some people, for example, would say they want to be a Rock Star, others may decide they want to be rich. Different persons, different goals. Some people, for example, want to be vampires.

Now that you have defined your goals, you can build your own Guide to Life (tm). You need a set of rules to guide your behavior, the behavior that will get you to accomplish your goals. Let's say, for example, that your goal is to be a good person. I assume you have at least some intuitive idea of what that means. You can now try to declare your first rule. The rules must be of the type "Always try to...". For example, in our case, the rule could be "Always try to do the good thing". It looks like a good rule, right?

Wrong. This rule is so general it is useless.

You need more specific rules. For example, one slightly better rule might be "Always try to do the honest thing to do". This is better, it can help you take decisions at the right moment. But for the day to day life, you need a set of rules that help you to take decisions in mili-seconds. Those rules, then, must be not so general but at the same time they need not to apply to only a very specific set of cases. I'll give you an example of a good rule : "Always try to share what you have". You need 3 or 4 of those kind of rules, because if you have a lot it'll be too hard to consider them all at the same time.

Remember, those rules must obey always to your previously defined Goals in Life (tm).

Last night The Evil List was updated well by the script, but this morning BlogSpot went down, and so the script wrongly marked all blogspot blogs as updated :(. It should be now handling this properly. I like Alejo's suggestion : Allow the use of special marks to allow blogs to define what part of its content must be checked. If the user has those marks in his page, the script will use them, if not, it will use the whole page. Maybe I'll do that after work.

After talking to Alejo and Fidel I wrote a little CGI script to show the list the blogs I read, in order of "last updated". That way I can browse only the blogs I know I have not yet read, and I dont waste my time browsing the whole web of blogs. Since I'm a generous person, I made the list available for everyone : The Evil List. The list can be updated by hand, using the form in the page. Following Fidel's advice, I wrote a small script that generates md5 sums of the pages, and checks if they have changed since the last time it ran, that way the list can be updated automatically, without needing each user to manually notify when they write their rants. I'll "crontab" this script to run every 5 minutes, or so.

Update: Nelson's page dynamically generates some of the content, so it can't be updated automatically by the script. I set a flag not to update his blog automatically (so if Nelson wants his page to appear as updated when he writes a new entry, he has to do it manually). The script for the md5's checks works fine, but somehow the crontab job is failing. I'll fix it tomorrow.
Update: Nevermid, I fixed the crontab problem. It was a problem of paths, as usual :P. It's updating every half an hour. Damn, I feel like 5 years ago 'webmastering' el calabozo with Fidel and Javier, writing cgi scripts in perl, etc. ahhhh, the good old days.

Thursday, after writing my last post on here, I took the tram to get back home. I was tired, with that feeling that only trying to chat and work at the same time can produce. Some time later, I began to notice there were more students than usual, for the 10 pm tram. I raised an eyebrow, and set all my senses in alert. When I arrived to my stop, at the heart of Grenoble's downtown, many groups of merry people were there singing, drinking, and being noisy. Most of them had a bottle in their hands. Then, I realised my fault. I had forgotten about one of the most important events of the year. Yes, my friends, the new beaujolais had arrived.

It was new. It was good. It was free.

This wine ritual is only fun if you are with a group of friends, and since I was alone, I only had a short walk, enjoying the happy atmosphere. When I got home, a neighbor couple (that I had never seen before) gently offered me a glass of beaujolais nouveau, so the night was not totally lost.

On the other side, Juan Pablo "FoxTrot" Morales wrote a very interesting post on the failure of sofware engineering documentation techniques. He expreses his frustration : Trying to maintain the huge set of diagrams and other documentation artifacts is not only not realistic, but also pointless, since those diagrams are hardly of any help when trying to understand the software they describe. I agree with most of his points.

For me, the big problem is to think documentation has to describe in a global and complete way how software works. We have (or I have) long time ago abandoned the idea that software can be written in a way that makes it possible to modify and reuse easily in every imaginable way (one of the OO promises). Instead, we build software making prevision of how is the software likely to be extended and reused in the future. That's where you try to reduce coupling with your favorite "patterns", where you define clean interfaces, etc. The software is then designed to be extended and modified at those entry points. Since documentation serves the purpose of maintainability and evolution, you only need to maintain documentation around those points.

An obvious example of this is when a library imposes some physical structure on the user's code, for example, by making it define the implementation of some interfaces. Call it a framwork, if you will. Having UML diagrams of the relevant aspects of the architecture where you are "pluging" your own code into the framework, and execution diagrams that explain how your code interacts with the rest of the application, plus some explanations in plain english, can save you hours and hours of browsing raw code. If you need to do something that differs slightly from the way the code was designed to be modified, I find the diagrams still very useful. This covers most cases. If you want to modify the software in a radical way, then there is nothing to do. At the end of the day you always have to launch your editor, and read the code.

Just a short update to let you know I'm alive. I have been buzy lately with work, specially cause I plan to take tomorrow afternoon off, to go to Montpellier. Past week I spent time improving my program, and thinking about what needs to be implemented to finally stop using CVS as a repository. I understand better the importance of some the ideas behind this program in the domain of software configuration management. The point here is that we drop some flexibility of typical SCM systems to gain simplicity. The cost of this is not too high, as experience (well, my boss experience) has shown that in almost every real use of those products people only use the subset we are proposing. As a consequence, we can make some important optimisations in terms of speed and, the most important point, distribution of repositories. Products such as ClearCase require a central repository, which of course doesn't scale well. We'll write a paper to submit to the next SCM conference, if we finish it in time (its due december)

Today, German Vega and I went to lunch at our boss' house. His wife, Yolanda, is colombian and she made a great colombian-style lunch. I had not eaten that well in weeks. We played cards too, and we had a nice afternoon there. He lives in a house in the mountains, pretty much as the one Javo describes in his website, but without the restaurant.

Firday I had an interview at ST, so they might actually hire me. The project I'd be engaged has not been offiacially accepted and signed yet, and it all sounds honestly fuzzy at the moment, so I don't think much about it. As my grandmother would say "que sea lo que dios quiera".

I might go to swim tomorrow. Stay tuned.

I had a very nice weekend at Montpellier. Montpellier is a great city, I will never get tired of visiting it. It is elegant, fun, bright and very alive. We went to some place called El Cubanito, that wasn't too bad. We also made arepas with German and Silvana, two colombian friends we met at Grenoble, who were at Montpellier on monday.

I'm back to Grenoble, and I'll start to work on a minimalistic control version system for my more general cooperative work application, that uses CVS at the moment.

I'm back.

Several important things happened since my last post, they need to be explained carefully :

First, Vulpecula posted some wise words denouncing consumism and other vices of western society. Second, the infamous Fric JalogÃ¼Ãn 2002 took place at San Jose de Bavaria, some town not too far from Bogota. Even when, according to some people, I'm unable to enjoy doing the limbo, I wish I could have attended it. If only to make fun of Alejo's unnoble costume. Third, Andrea and I had a great weekend. It was rainy, so we stayed home reading comics (Tintin for Andrea, Corto Maltese for me), we went to the movies, and we went out for dinner.

Then, everything went to hell.

I had a presentation for the ST guys (again) for today, so I had thought : Monday and half tuesday to finish programming, tuesday afternoon for preparing the demo. Monday night, my boss informs us the demo has to take place at ST headquarters. No problem. Well, we have no CVS server there, so we install one locally. The laptop we were going to take with us has windows on it, so I installed the cvs for windows. Then, nothing worked. I spent almost all tuesday trying to make the program work using that cvs for windows, but it just didn't seem to like the fact my application reuses the CVS connection (apparently I have to kill the connection for each command, which is stupid, and I have some listeners things that I couldn't change too easily in a few hours). So by the end of the day, I gave up, and I decided to take my computer with linux. I finished the programming in an hour, and this morning I made a little test, and we left for the headquarters of the gargantuan "we are the world's third largest producer of microelec..blahblah" and scary company I mentioned earlier. From now, I will just call it the cosmodemonic company. The demo, by miracle, was ok. And we got invited to lunch there by the boss of the R/D cell we were presenting our work. End of the story.

Recompiling ION with the WARPS_WS option made my life happier. Apparently warp can be configured without recompilation in the devel version, but I didn't know if I was able to apply Alejo's patch on it, so I recompiled the old one. Ahh, apparently you can give names to frames in the devel version too, which was missing (and if I'm not wrong it was one of the reasons not to apply alejo's patch..). Well, anyway, I think I'll keep on using ION, even when the use of applications that display several windows (The GIMP, for example) still annoys me a bit.

Tonight I'll go eat cakes chez Remy and Sonya Sanlaville.

Following the advice of a recognized unix hacker I installed and tested ION, a non-traditional window manager for X-windows. So far, I like it :

It maximizes the used screen space

It minimizes the use of the mouse

Basically, instead of windows "floating" on a "desktop", you run applications with a GUI inside one of the divisions of the screen (frames) that you have previously created and resized. There are no overlapping windows. If you run more than one applications inside a frame, they are "tabbed".

When you exit ION, the structure of frames and workspaces (virtul desktops) is saved, and thanks to a simple and clever patch created by the mentioned unix hacker, you can also map a class of applications to one of the frames. This way, you can define the layout you want, and it will be recreated each session.

I'll be using ION this week, and then I'll decide if I'll keep it or not.

But Sergio.. you were always talking gibberish about how great KDE was!

Yes, but it doesn't mean I have to use everything from KDE. Particularly the window manager. The "all or nothing","you are with us, or against us" logic is only followed by very, very stupid persons.

The best thing about living in France is the cheese. My reduced budget of student prevents me from getting the really good cheese, but every week I buy my basic dose of camembert or brie. This week I assaulted my wallet and bought me some roquefort and emmental de savoie.

This said, I found it scandalous when Vulpecula told me the incredibly prices they charge for President's brie in Bogota's Carrefour. President's brie is the big mac of the cheese world, it is supposed to be cheap. How am I supposed to eat any cheese when I get back home? Screw that.

This weekend was extremly relaxing as I had absolutely nothing to do, for a change. I went for a walk, I read some comics, and I had a couple of beers.

Andrea will be here next thursday :). Things look good.
